Review: The Keg Steakhouse – Ottawa

75 York St., Ottawa, Ontario – (613) 241-8514 – Webpage

Date of Visit: February 6, 2011

Ambience and Service

A lot of people are unfairly dismissive of the Keg because it is a chain restaurant but I have never had a bad meal at any of their locations. The Keg in Byward market has an upper and lower floor and the lower is actually a split level with the front portion being sunken from the main floor. On this visit I was in the sunken portion right beside a window at the front of the building and I was seated in the exact same seat I had sat in a on a visit year earlier. It was a little chilly this time bit not unpleasantly so and the location had adequate light to allow me to read and write my review notes. There was a fairly good crowd but I did not have to wait to be seated and I did not find it too noisy get annoyed by patron or staff traffic.

I have always had pleasant service at Keg restaurants but, occasionally, I end up getting served by a young person who, though enthusiastic, is inexperienced and prone to mistakes. This was the case on this present visit. The young man who served me took an order for a Dark Mexican Beer featured on the specials menu and then returned nearly 20 minutes later to shamefacedly admit they were out. I wasn’t actually put out at all and, after I ordered another drink instead, a supervisor-type person came and announced the drink would be on the house, which I thought a nice touch. Later, after my meal, I ordered a final sherry and my young server brought it in a highball glass with ice. I explained the proper way to serve it and he brought me a replacement with such a look of embarrassment that I actually felt sorry for him. The rest of his service was impeccable, however, and my tip reflected that.

The Steak

Rib eye Steak – The steak was served with fries and sautéed mushrooms and crispy onions, which were very nice. I ordered the steak Chicago medium rare and it was served mostly as ordered. It was a bit more rare than medium rare but the charring was excellent and the overall effect was nice. It was not quite as tender as the cuts at Al’s or Hy’s that I had been served earlier that same week and it had a bit of gristle running through it. Overall, though, the seasoning was handled very deftly and it was tasty and succulent. I gave it a rib-steak rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

My waiter was inexperienced and made a few mistakes but I can’t say that this detracted from my enjoyment of a decent steak and a nice relaxing meal.

  1. I spent a few days in Ottawa last Fall and ate a few dinners in the Byward Market (including one at The Keg). I’m having fun going through your Byward Market reviews. 🙂

Comments, thoughts or suggestions most welcome...
