Review: Dunn’s Famous Deli – Ottawa
355 Dalhousie Street, Ottawa, (613) 562-4966 – Website
Date of Visit: March 22, 2012
I hadn’t really planned on reviewing breakfasts when I started my blog but my wife thought it would be a good idea and on my recent trip to Ottawa I hit a couple of spots that deserve a mention. Dunn’s is one of them:
Dunn’s is just down the street from Les Suites hotel, which is where I usually stay when I visit the capital. It is part of a restaurant chain, I recently discovered, and it is primarily a licensed Deli specializing in Montreal Smoked Meat. More importantly, from my perspective, they offer breakfasts 24 hours a day, and, for those who require it, their breakfast menu offers a ‘Hair of the Dog Caesar’… although I haven’t been tempted by that particular offering yet…
Ambience and Service
Dunn’s, in Byward Market, sits on the corner of Dalhousie and George streets and has large windows offering a pleasant view while you eat. It is a fairly small, but is nevertheless quite airy and has spacious booths and tables.
The service on this particular occasion was excellent, but I can also have never had any reason to complain in that regard on any previous visits. I was shown to a nice table immediately on arrival and the waitress, who was friendly and cheerful, brought me coffee right away and took my order as soon as I was ready.
The menu at Dunn’s runs to the simple and the hearty. Breakfast selections include the standard sort of combinations – choice of sausage, ham, or bacon with various sorts of eggs and toast etc. – and the prices are very reasonable. Their steak and eggs special, for example, which comes with all the usual sides, runs for just a little over $14.
I arrived just shortly after nine a.m. and, since I was planning lunch for around twelve, I decided to forego the usual full breakfast I usually eat there and kept it simple. Everything was delicious, the home fries especially, and the only complaint I had was about the ham. There was nothing wrong with it taste-wise or anything, but I really hate when restaurants serve those sandwich style thin slices. I much prefer a thicker slice and I had forgotten having had the same disappointment on a previous visit.
Dunn’s provides good, hearty comfort food at a reasonable price in comfortable surroundings. The service has been friendly, efficient and courteous every time I have visited and I make it a regular stop for their excellent breakfasts whenever I visit the capital.
