Review: Row House Lobster Co.
146 Richmond St., Victoria Row, Charlottetown, PEI – Website
Date of Visit: July, 2016
The Row House sits half-way along Victoria Row, which is a pleasant, tree-lined pedestrian only street running alongside the Confederation Centre of the Arts. I passed by the place while shopping in the morning and, after I looked at their menu, I made a note to return later in the afternoon. I meant to have lobster at least one during my visit to Charlottetown and this looked liked a good prospect…
Row House advertises itself as steakhouse and lobster house with a wine bar, and the wine list did, indeed, look pretty extensive. The food menu has quite a number of steaks, at reasonable prices, and of course there is lobster, which can be prepared in a traditional salt water boil, broiled with buttered breadcrumbs or with ‘Asian flavor’. There is also a pretty decent complement of appetizers and a terrific sounding Seafood Platter.
The interior of is quite modern in contrast to the 19th century red- brick facade. It actually struck me as being a little austere in its modernity with one part furnished with the towering high stool type chairs of the sort I dislike. Luckily, the outdoor patio is very nice and it was a pleasant day, weather-wise, during my visit.
Market Lobster – The Row House does a large dinner called the ‘Lobster Church Supper’ which includes a starter of mussels, then chowder, and follows the lobster (plus fingerling spuds and slaw) with desert. This sounded a bit much for me so I just went with the platter that comes without the starter or dessert. I duly ate it, and it was… Well, boiled lobster… You love it or don’t. I love it and this one only left me wanting a bit more. The potatoes were a bit underdone but still decent and I gave this a 4 out of 5.
Dessert Taco – I don’t usually bother with dessert but my waitress tempted me with trying this selection. It consisted of a puffy deep fried pastry shell, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and strawberries, all garnished with drizzled honey and powder cinnamon… Much too sweet for my diet but great. I gave this a 4 out of 5.
The Row House is a pleasant place for lunch or dinner and the prices are decent. I enjoyed good food and the service was excellent. I would happily come back, and I rated it at a solid 4 out of 5.
