Review: Goldstone Bakery and Restaurant

139 Keefer Street, Vancouver (604) 688-9328

Goldstone 1

Date of Visit: July, 2017

I failed to notice this place in several walks around Vancouver’s Chinatown, rather, I came across it while doing a Google search for places to have breakfast within walking distance of my hotel. What I liked about this place is that it opened at 7:30am, which suited me down to the ground…

The interior is quite spacious and would seat over 100 when full. It is basically ‘diner-style’ and is very bright and cheerful. I was seated and served with complimentary tea within minutes and the service was great the whole time I was there.

I like that the menus here are on the table top under glass. The selection of food here is quite extensive and is mostly Chinese except for some western sections which cover standard breakfast items and sandwiches. There was also a separate special menu that day that offered three options. The first was just the regular ham and eggs any style, and another was a choice of several omelets. What caught my attention though was the third selection which gave you ham and two eggs followed by a noodle dish with a choice of several toppings. I went with that…

Ham and Scrambled Egg – This came with a roll, which I didn’t bother with. As for the main attraction it was perfectly fine. Other than that, I am not sure what else there is to be said about ham and eggs…

Goldstone 5

Beef with Preserved Vegetable – For the noodles, you can choose ‘Spaghetti’, ‘Macaroni’ or ‘Vermicelli’ and I went with the latter. These were served in a nice, light chicken broth and the savory addition was placed on top. In Chinese cuisine, ‘Pickled Vegetable’ can mean quite a range of things and, here, I am pretty sure that the veggie in question was lactic-acid fermented Chinese Mustard. It was salty and sour and went very nicely with the tender, thinly sliced beef. I liked this even though I couldn’t finish all the noodles.

This is a good place for a cheap meal. My breakfast cost me only $9 with tax and the food I received was very good. Great service and nice atmosphere… I rate it at a 5 out of 5.
