The Goldstone Bakery and Restaurant in Vancouver’s Chinatown didn’t manage to survive the Covid-19 pandemic, and recently closed it’s doors after three decades of service. I am afraid I didn’t really manage to get much of a sense of the place after having only stopped in once for breakfast, but it seemed a nice, friendly sort of place. What I will recall is that the dish you see pictured above was the second part of what is, to date, the mist singularly unusual breakfast special I have ever encountered.

Roasted Red Peppers at the Efendy Restaurant in Halifax

I previously featured the very pleasant Efendy Restaurant in downtown Halifax when I reviewed their excellent Grilled Haloumi Appetizer. In my introduction to Efendy, I noted that the menu there was chiefly Turkish, but that there were dishes from other Mediterranean cuisines on offer as well. Their Roasted Red Pepper dish, shown above, was every bit as good as their Grilled Halloumi, and this lovely offering clearly showed a Greek influence with the inclusion of tangy Feta Cheese.

Shepherd’s Pie at the Kilt and Castle Pub in Yellowknife

The dish you see pictured above probably doesn’t look much like a Shepherd’s Pie as most people know it, but it was exactly that, if a little unorthodox. It was served to me at the Kilt and Castle Pub in Yellowknife on a particularly cold evening, and what actually turned out to be two meals in one just hit the spot perfectly.

I have previously posted a recipe for my own version of Salmon Rillettes, in which I explain the origin of the name and the basic technique. The appetizer you see above was served to me at Lapointe’s Restaurant in Ottawa but, for a simple dish, this otherwise very decent Seafood restaurant did a singularly unimpressive job.
