The Rice Noodle Roll (腸粉), at Double Greeting in Edmonton was generous with shrimp, but otherwise poor. It only got a Rating of 2 out of 5.
I managed a number of different Dim Sum selections at the Double Greeting Wonton House during my one and only visit. They were all pretty good except for the Rice Noodle Roll with Shrimp, which was poorly cooked, not well presented, and quite disappointing after the other dishes I enjoyed.
The rice noodle roll at Double Greeting itself was quite generously stuffed with shrimp. They were fresh and very tasty but, unfortunately, this was the only good quality about these ‘Cheong Fun’ (腸粉). The sauce poured over them was an extremely sweet soy-based sauce. A little sweetness is nice, but a delicate sweetness, like that of oyster sauce, enhances rice noodle rolls, while the thick, syrupy concoction here overwhelmed it.
The main failure of the 腸粉 at Double Greeting was the rice noodle sheet. It was extremely thick and heavy and, not only was it difficult to pick up and maneuver, it tasted doughy and raw. All in all, the adjective that most quickly comes to mind to describe this effort is ‘stodgy’. The rest of the meal was decent, but the rice noodle roll was definitely underwhelming.
