Review: Elgin St. Diner – Ottawa

Elgin St Diner 1

Date of Visit: December 3, 2013

I don’t often eat a full breakfast when I am on culinary adventures to Ottawa (or elsewhere, for that matter) and this mostly because I prefer to only have something light in the early morning so as to save myself for lunch. On this particular occasion, I was up very early and, having spied this place on a tour of the neighborhood, I decided to give it a try… Continue reading “Review: Elgin St. Diner – Ottawa”

Courtyard 1

Date of Visit: July 14, 2013

I picked this spot for my evening meal during a scouting expedition in the Byward Market area one very hot Sunday morning. What appealed to me, perhaps even more than the menu, was the lovely cool and shaded courtyard from which it takes its name. The menu, though brief, and consisting of just 16 items excluding desert, was quite rich with the promise that anything I might order would be both complex and interesting… Continue reading “Review: The Courtyard Restaurant”

Market Organics 1

On my last trip to Ottawa, my wife asked me to seek out what she described as a ‘Health Food’ store in order to pick her up some seeds and grain for sprouting at home. She couldn’t remember the name of the place she had in mind, just that it was ‘some place near, but not quite in, Byward Market’. After searching for a bit I couldn’t see anything likely but then the very helpful young people at the information booth in the Market’s main building not only steered me directly to ‘Market Organics’, but also consulted their computers and told me what times it was open.

Armed with directions, I located the place very easily and came across a building I had actually seen before but had never thought to enter. I was really only expecting to grab the stuff my wife wanted but after going inside I came across one of those sorts of ‘Foodie’ treasure troves that can keep me diverted for ages… Continue reading “Source: Market Organics”

Pub 101 1

Date of visit: July 13, 2013

This little place sits at the edge of Byward Market at the corner of Dalhousie and York. Dalhousie is a main thoroughfare but there is a certain peacefulness to the tree shaded corner that gives its outdoor patio a certain backwater serenity. For some reason, I was rather under the impression that no food was served here but, when I sat down on the patio for a liquid refreshment one day near noon, I was handed a menu. I decided to give the food a try as well… Continue reading “Review: Pub 101”

Review: The Grand Pizzeria and Bar

The Grand 1

Date of Visit: July 14,2013

For many years, this particular location in Byward Market was the home of ‘Oregano’s’, a family oriented Italian restaurant. The Italian tradition now continues at The Grand, where the focus is mainly on pizza (there are 20 different ones available), along with a number of pasta dishes and some interesting appetizers. After scouting out a couple of places for a later dinner, I decided to pop in here for lunch… Continue reading “Review: The Grand Pizzeria and Bar”

Don Cherry 1

Date of Visit: July 13, 2013

During my last trip to Ottawa, I wanted to bring home a nice single-malt Scotch and so I thought I could combine a trip to the well-stocked LCBO on Rideau street with a visit to Don Cherry’s for an early brunch… Continue reading “Review: Don Cherry’s Sports Bar”

Mukut 1

Date of Visit: July 9, 2013

I had made a note of two Indian restaurants I wished to try on my most recent visit to Ottawa, both of which of which lie within a block of each other on Rideau Street. Unfortunately, the first of these, Passage to India, appeared to be closed for good when I checked it out but, undaunted, I proceeded on to Mukut instead… Continue reading “Review: Mukut Indian Restaurant”

Peter Devine 1

Date of Visit: July 11, 2013

For lunch on this particular occasion, I had sat myself on the patio of a nearby Vietnamese restaurant but, after perusing a singularly uninspiring menu, and finding the outdoor dining far too hot, I wandered up the street to this place where the patio was nicely shaded and not too busy. I didn’t know it right away, but Peter Devine’s is actually part of the same establishment as the Heart and Crown situated right next door, although, as my waiter informed me, their menus are somewhat different… Continue reading “Review: Peter Devine’s Irish Pub”

Cafe Indochine 1

Date of Visit: July 11, 2013

I ate at this tiny restaurant with my wife around ten years ago although I didn’t recognize it until I had a peek inside and saw the same, shot-gun narrow little eatery divided into an upper and lower floor with just a few tables on each. I hadn’t especially planned on Vietnamese cuisine for supper on this particular occasion but after a quick perusal of the menu I decided to give the place a second try… Continue reading “Review: Café Indochine”

Stella Osteria 1

Date of Visit: July 7, 2013

I have passed by this place numerous times on forays through Byward Market but it has usually been full. I was actually on my way to have lunch at the Blue Cactus Bar and Grill (which is affiliated with this place), when I was drawn by the pleasant patio here. The lunch menu is rather abbreviated, consisting of a small number of appetizers and salads, some pasta selections, as well as pizza and a house burger, but there are also a few more substantial entrees including a strip-loin steak and Chicken Parmigiano. The dinner menu, which I asked to look at, was substantially the same, although there were a few additional seafood dishes, including an interesting paella. Fortunately, I was in the mood, on this very hot day, for something simple and the house burger sounded about right for lunch… Continue reading “Review- Stella Osteria”
